Thank you for applying to the Fatemarked Facility on behalf of your chosen character. Please answer the following questions, which will allow us to determine whether they are suitable candidates. Be honest and thorough.
1. Character Name: Sophia Fairuza Inks
2. Canon/Series: Sophia comes from a world much like our own, with one chief difference: monsters and humans...don’t quite coexist, but the monsters have always been known to be real. Magic is still present, existing side-by-side with modern science, and in as many myriad forms and fields as any scientific or parascientific discipline. Magic and monsters were largely kept underground until the 1960s, when both sides of the Cold War began to exploit them for their own gain, and monsters and magic users began to fight for their own civil rights.
Basically: Modern world + magic + monsters. Good? Good.
Sophia was born and raised in the small town of Hawthorn, Virginia, a rural haven for monsters and magical types where they can live openly without fear of prejudice or persecution. However, she grew restless with the small-town life and planned to go to college and eventually move to the big city! She kept her head down and studied, dreaming of the big wide world and learning everything she could to keep up with her family. She was the odd one out, being a sphinx who hated riddles, but she had found a niche: trivia. Her mind absorbed information like a sponge, and so she opted to use that to her benefit, excelling academically as well as honing her sphinx skills.
She had a successful college career, as well as a fun one. Sophia partied as hard as she studied, and while people were scared of her at first, she won them over with booze and her generally charming personality. Going to a largely-human college had been lonely, but she’d wanted to broaden her horizons after living in a town that consisted mostly of her own sort, if not her own kind. And she found humans to be fascinating. So like monsters, but so different, and so fearful of magic.
She faced some hazing in school, from people who were brave enough to try bullying a literal monster. Human cruelty amused her, mostly because she would take the opportunity to get them right back. She never killed or ate anyone, not even a little, even though she really wanted to; her education took precedence over her temper, but some days, it ended up being a near thing. People were scared of her, and the college’s decision of admitting a man-eating monster sparked some intense controversy. Some of the attention was fun and exciting, but mostly it was just incredibly annoying. The controversy died down after about a year once there were no reports of mysterious student maulings, and she was left to her own devices to study...everything. Eventually she chose a major (film studies) and a minor (computer science), though that was more because whatever she had the most credits in first won.
Once she graduated, she was off to The City! (The City being Washington, DC - close enough to home to still visit easily, but big enough for her to still feel like she was making her way in the world.) City life for her was fun, but tough; big wings can be a hindrance on the Metro and people tend to freak out when they see a monster walking down the street. Also, nobody wants to go to a coffee shop run by a sphinx except for other monsters, so she’d had a little trouble getting some startup capital. Eventually she managed to win a prime location downtown (gambled with the landlord and won) and set up her shop - Caffeine Nation! Her witch friend from Hawthorn came to move in with her, and eventually started bringing ghosts home, and now Sophia’s basically like Sam Malone in Cheers, running a combination bar and coffee shop for humans and monsters alike.
3. Age: 27
4. Species: Sphinx
5. Role: Sentinel
6. Why do you think your character is a good candidate for the Fatemarked setting? What about “paranormal investigating barista sphinx” doesn’t scream “excellent Sentinel candidate”?
7. What skills does your character have which might make them a good Sentinel? She can gib a human in ten seconds flat.
8. What traits, abilities, or qualities does your character have which might be the reason they are Fatemarked? N/A
9. How do you think your character will react to their new role in life? Honestly? Not the weirdest thing that’s happened to her. She’ll probably roll with it, especially since she can go home in a year.
10. What are some of your character's strengths? Sophia’s loyal where her loyalty’s been earned, and is very big on returning favors (because she hates owing people anything, it makes her crazy). She’s also very clever and has an incredibly deep knowledge base.
11. What are some of your character's weaknesses? Sophia is cat-lazy, deeply competitive to the point of being vicious, and does not possess morals as humans would understand them. Sophia is also extremely proud, to a fault. Also - some people would consider this a negative trait - she loves puns.
12. Does your character have any health problems we should know about? She had psittacosis once? But it shouldn’t cause any issues.
13. Describe a single important event in your character's history. Since Sophia’s family runs a unicorn preserve, she and her brother were often set up by the family on nighttime poacher patrol.
Rarely, they encountered poachers.
The first time they did, Sophia trapped both of them in a trivia game while her brother went to get the rest of the family. The poachers lost, and one of them shot Sophia.
She didn’t take too kindly to that.
By the time the family got there, she’d dismembered both of them and was busy anger-chewing on someone’s femur. It took a lot of convincing to get her to go to the hospital. And that’s why you don’t mess with a sphinx.
14. Who is your character's next-of-kin? Sophia has a large extended family, many of whom live in Hawthorn on the family farm/ranch. She has one littermate, her brother Peregrine, who has gone into the family business of running the unicorn preserve.
15. Tell us about the most important relationship your character has. Sophia values her family very much, but she values her friendships more. Most people don’t want to be friends with monsters. She probably values her friendship with Hamish the ghost the most. Hamish died in the 1800s and was unaware of the supernatural before his recent awakening, and the fact that he’s trying to get adjusted to the present and to the supernatural world is very endearing to her.
16. What else should we know about your character that might recommend them to the position? Sphinxes cannot lie outright, nor can they be lied to (in-person; they can smell untruths when they are being told, but if it’s via video or over text that ability does not come into play.) As a result, she has gotten very good at misleading people without actually lying. She gets very, very cranky when she’s lied to, or when someone attempts to lie to her; one of the only things that can spoil her good mood is being deceived.
Additionally, sphinxes have their own magic; asking a riddle and the mortal’s acceptance of the riddle game creates a contract of sorts, with the stakes being the human’s life. Sophia’s game is far lower-key; she asks trivia, and if the human can’t answer it, they have to give her something.
17. Please detail your character's inventory upon arrival in the game.
x1 Nintendo 3DS, with assortment of games, and charger
x1 charm bracelet with small charms enchanted by her witch friend, for protection and prosperity
x1 salt cellar full of unicorn magic-infused coffee
x1 book full of recipes and potions
18. What is your character's Fatemark? N/A
19. Please provide two writing samples showing us your ability to roleplay.
